February's Challenge: Use a reusable cup or mug!

Often we find ourselves running out the door to work or class and in line at our local coffee shop.  When it comes time for us to place an order, we realize: "Ugh!  I forgot my reusable mug!"

This month, sedGreen challenges each of us "to fill up with a reusable cup." Put your mug in your backpack/bag/purse before leaving your dorm/apt/house. 

Why?  Many beverage containers end up in the trash, instead of being recycled with paper recyclables.  Styrofoam are worse because they are not biodegradable.

Facts:
  • The average American office worker uses 500 disposable cups a year, or 1.4 per day. 
  • BU coffee shops on the Charles River Campus used 1,025,726 paper cups in FY09.  
  • Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour.  
  • Help reduce this waste by using a reusable mug or bottle. 
  • Starbucks, Campus Convenience, and other local vendors, offer discounts on coffee if you bring your own mug.
